Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Conductor Practice Test

An extra train refers to a train that is not included in the regular operating schedules or bulletins. This type of train is typically added to accommodate additional passenger demand, operational needs, or unforeseen circumstances. It allows for flexibility within the transportation system to respond to changing conditions, such as increased ridership during peak times or special events.

The definition distinguishes extra trains from other types of trains that are part of a fixed timetable or schedule. A train with a designated schedule is planned and publicized, making it a regular part of the service. Similarly, a special train for emergencies would also be a planned response to a specific situation, rather than an unlisted or unplanned service. Lastly, a passenger train with extra features suggests enhancements or additional amenities, which does not align with the definition of an extra train as it pertains to scheduling and operation.
